To initiate the SAR membership process, you should begin by ensuring that you can satisfy the SAR membership requirements and that you are a direct descendant of a Revolutionary War Patriot. The SAR does not restrict membership on basis of race, age, color, religion, national origin, nation of citizenship or residency. To establish eligibility you must be able to confirm that you are a direct ancestral line descendant of a Patriot by providing appropriate SAR acceptable documentation.

Within the Sons of the American Revolution the people that deal with new member applications are known as “Registrars”.  During the process you may deal with Robert Ross, our Chapter Registrar.  He will help you through the membership application process and shepherd your application through our State and National Headquarters to obtain your membership.  Bob may be reached at lewisandclarkilsar@gmail.com 

If you have a bloodline relative (parent, grandparent, uncle, aunt or cousin) that is or was a SAR or DAR member we encourage you to contact us before starting the on-line application.  DAR approved applications beginning in 1985, and SAR approved applications beginning in 2012, may help reduce the amount of documentation required to prove your lineage.  You will need to provide a copy of the approved application, commonly referred to as a “Record Copy,” to the chapter registrar so that it may be reviewed for acceptability in proving the ancestral line to your Revolution War soldier, sailor or patriot.  This will also help in determining what, if any, additional documentation may be required and what additional documentation may be required.

If you do not have access to the DAR or SAR record copy, you can purchase the appropriate one through the DAR Genealogical Research System (https://services.dar.org/Public/DAR_Research/record_copy/?action=overview) and the SAR Patriot Research System (https://sarpatriots.sar.org/) website.  An approved DAR record copy will have DAR copyright information at the bottom of each page, along with the member number (preceded by the the letters “M”, and the ancestor number, likewise preceded by the letter “A”.  The SAR record copy will be marked in the upper left hand corner with the words “SAR Record Copy”.
